What is Tongue Tie?
Tongue-tie or ankyloglossia in medical term, is a congenital oral anomaly which happens when the string of tissue that attaches to the tongue and floor of the mouth is too short. Many cases of tongue tie correct themselves during a baby’s first six weeks, structure of the mouth still changes, and some babies learn to adapt to a tongue-tie that doesn’t go away. This is not an urgent medical operation but may affect the newborn’s latching to the mother. Tongue-tie newborns may produce clicking noise and repeatedly breaks suction while feeding that may result to poor growth development and later on may affect his speech.
Moms out there, tongue-tie can be corrected with simple surgery called frenelotomy. It is done with or without topical anesthesia because, it is less traumatic than ear piercing or circumcision. We even had a baby patient who didn’t cry during the procedure.
If you suspect that your baby is tongue-tied, mention it to his/her pedia doctor or to a pediatric dentist, even if he don’t have any problem in feeding. We can help you decide if this can interfere with speech development.
